Don’t let the name fool you. The Virgins is a band that
oozes sexuality and confidence (just Google ‘The Virgins Venus in Chains’).
Unafraid to push the boundaries that have constrained much of the music
industry, the Virgins instead focus on evoking natural feelings through genuine
music. There is an utter lack of conformity within the music of the Virgins,
which is evident with each individual track. It’s no surprise that the group
has amassed quite the cult following in the past five years. The
alternative-rock group effectively produces music that contradicts the
frivolous, almost meaningless, songs that are often heard on popular radio
stations.
The back and forth nature of the latest album is very much
reflective of the band itself. While one song may be slow and emotional, the
next will be fast-paced and suggestive. There is an ease about the Virgins,
which is highlighted by the fact that each song is equally as meaningful as the
next. The Virgins are gritty and personal which makes the music have a far
greater impact on listeners. There is a clear depth and sincerity within each
song, making the Virgins that much more unique. Unlike many pop-artists who add
an electric beat and sing insincere lyrics, tailor made for a specific age
group and audience, the Virgins clearly make music that suits their personal
lifestyles and interests.
It is clear that the group is not trying to cater to the
needs and desires of an audience. The four guys are simply making music for
themselves. It just so happens that their personal decisions and music choices
are greatly appreciated by avid music listeners. There is an undeniable
sensuality about the music and, while it may not necessarily be intentional,
the rawness has become incredibly appealing to a wide audience. There is a
seductive, often unbridled, passion within each individual song that has had an
enormous impact on the reception of the group’s previous albums and EPs.
'One Week of Danger'
One Week of Danger
is the epitome of seduction. The lyrics alone are enough to evoke certain
emotions and feelings within listeners. Combined with the sporadic, breathy
whispers, the song creates an instantaneous sex appeal towards the band. There
is a cool and breezy confidence within the song that is completely reflective
of the feelings that the music evokes. It is impossible to listen to the song
and not be overcome with a sense of bold assurance. Only truly good music is
capable of resonating within a listener to such a high degree. Very few bands
and artists have the ability to, for three full minutes, determine how an
individual will feel about themselves and others.
While the vast majority of the band’s music focuses on the
seduction of the audience, there are numerous songs that are simply upbeat and
fun. Hey Hey Girl and Rich Girls are likely the most well
known songs from the band’s self-titled debut album. This probably stems from
the fact that they are far more sanguine and catchy than the other tracks. It
is no surprise that said songs have become popular considering the fact that
they are the closest the Virgins are willing to get to the stereotypical ‘Hot
100’ radio hits.

Today’s release of the Virgins’ second album has been
eagerly anticipated by much of the group’s cult-like followers. The past music
has instilled a passion and eagerness in fans that are likely downloading
‘Strike Gently’ as I type. I myself purchased the album upon waking and I can
say with confidence that the Virgins have done it again. The album exudes the
sybaritic vibe associated with classic 70’s rock bands. People have often drawn
comparisons to the Virgins and the iconic rock headliners from the 70’s. While
true that the group’s rawness is very much comparable to the Rolling Stones,
what makes the Virgins different is the fact that they have reinvented said raw
passion to suit the modern generation. The new music is very much reflective of
the general tone that has previously been emitted by the group. There remains
an intensity and uninhibited passion that fans have come to love over the past
few years.

Strike Gently will not disappoint fans who have stuck with
the Virgins since the release of the band’s first EP. It should be noted that there is a far less fast-paced vibe within the songs themselves. While true that there are fewer energetic dance beats, the music is as interesting and unique as former tracks. As always, the music is a
perfect hybrid of gritty passion and upbeat melody. There is an undeniable
synergy within the album that successfully links each song with an overarching
album ambiance. This album is a highly recommended for anyone with an interest
in genuinely passionate alternative-rock music.
