Mind the Gap, Seriously...

Self-described as, “ A Sri Lankan, a Mexican, a Korean, and a guy from Cleveland,” Mind the Gap has music with just as much variety as the band members themselves. A combination of soft and slow with a smattering of electric pop, Mind the Gap offers a synchronous fusion of sound. There is an incredible ease to the music, which is highlighted as one song ends and another begins. Rather than focusing on catering to the demands of the pop-rock culture, Mind the Gap offers a uniquely mellow sound that lovers of any genre can enjoy.

While much of the music off of the album holds a slow and steady pace, each song is infused with an intensity that resonates within listeners. The album is a song within itself due to the careful placement of each individual track. There is an almost languid build within the album, with each song gradually picking up intensity as the full album plays out. Rather than the cliché order of fast, slow, fast song placement, Mind the Gap offers audiences the chance to listen to the gradual build of music.

The most appealing thing about Mind the Gap is the fact that, though the music is entirely consistent throughout, each song is comparable to another artist. One doesn’t listen to Mind the Gap and compare them to just one group or artist. MTG is a group that is cognizant of their abilities as a band, which allows them to push the limits and create music that can be associated with much of the world’s most noted artists. While easily comparable to indie darlings like the Morning Benders and Local Natives, Mind the Gap can just as quickly be equated to the rock sounds of Matchbox Twenty. This is what is so refreshing about the band.

While some would argue that sounding like other artists makes an individual or group less unique, in the case of Mind the Gap, it merely highlights the band’s versatility and adaptability. Mind the Gap can play with best of them. They’re the type of group that could easily open for a slew of different artists. The intense and almost crazy vibe of the Limousines would mesh well with the electricity of Mind the Gap where as the heavy lyrics and harmonies of Matchbox Twenty could fit just as easily with the group.

The group’s newest single, ‘Find My Way,’ offers a slightly different sound than that which is heard on their first album. While the first album focused on emphasizing a raw emotion through melodic harmonies and smooth vocals, it seems as though the second will be far more upbeat and spirited. The steady beats have intensified and the guitar riffs have become far more pronounced. Based on the single, it appears as though Mind the Gap’s second album, though far different than its first, will be just as good.

The best thing about Mind the Gap is the fact that they are placing no restraints on themselves. The group is not succumbing to the pressures of the music industry by constraining themselves to one genre over another. The group’s focus is to make good music no matter the style or classification. There are no limitations for Mind the Gap, which the group has thankfully realized. There is no doubt that Mind the Gap will soon find enormous success because of their ability to continuously create new and innovative music. As I stated, Mind the Gap has the potential to open for a slew of different bands and artists. Said bands will be just as capable of opening for them when Mind the Gap surpasses them all.
